POST SURGERY DRAINAGE

Post Surgery Drainage®  Sotelo-Paz Technique

All you need to know about it

Like manual lymphatic drainage, Post-Surgery Drainage® is a type of manual therapy not to be confused with massage. Before we move on, let’s revise the difference between massage and manual therapies:

“Manual therapy and massage therapy are both hands-on practices that can help with pain and relaxation, but they have different goals and techniques:
Manual therapy ► A type of physical therapy that uses targeted pressure on soft tissue and bones to reduce pain, relieve tension, and improve joint and muscle mobility. Manual therapy can also help restore function after an injury. Techniques include joint mobilization, passive stretching, and manual traction.
Massage therapy ► Uses different amounts of pressure and movements on muscles and soft tissue to relieve stress and relax muscles. Techniques include kneading, wringing, skin rolling, rhythmic percussion, cupping, hacking, or plucking. Massage therapy can also improve circulation, flexibility, and range of motion. It can also help with sleep quality, recovery time, and soreness.
The goal of manual therapy is also different from the goal of massage therapy. For many practitioners, massage therapy is geared toward promoting physical and mental relaxation. For physical therapists, manual therapy has a slightly different goal — to reduce pain and improve physical function.”

Post-Surgery Drainage® was designed for patients who have undergone cosmetic surgery and need a focused approach to prevent the appearance of lumps, bumps, and other imperfections associated with their surgery.

Marian Sotelo-Paz created and patented this unique technique in the United States after noticing that a different approach was needed to prevent after-surgery imperfections.

Depending on their surgeon’s advice, patients are expected to have their lymphatic drainage done 24 hours after surgery and extend this treatment for about three to four weeks to ensure the best results.

Read below to see why this is THE right approach after cosmetic surgery.

Why Post Surgery Drainage is different?

Post-surgery drainage is an advanced manual therapy technique focused on preventing fibrosis after cosmetic surgery. It tackles the first symptoms of fibrosis.

    • Small lump
    • Bumps
    • Uneven areas
    • Skin texture change
    • Skin color change

It differs from manual lymphatic drainage and post-op because the protocol is fully personalized and customized to each patient’s needs. Positioning and routines are flexible to adapt to progress, and the number of sessions needed will always depend on the patient’s condition. The therapist performs a quick evaluation before the first session to identify concerns.

Typically, patients resort to this option when they see the first red flags 2 or 3 weeks after cosmetic surgery after they have tried other therapists and other methods. The approach to each case is different.

Sadly, with the surge of cosmetic surgeries and the high demand for post-surgery lymphatic drainage, many people are attempting to perform massages on post-op patients. Estheticians, nurses, and nurse assistants, amongst others, are making “massages” to patients after their surgery without the proper training and, unfortunately, outside their scope of practice.

They also provide other modalities, such as pressotherapy and lymphatic drainage machinery, with a wide variety of devices that claim to be effective, but unfortunately, they waste valuable recovery time.

If you are receiving therapy elsewhere and you do not see progress or see one or more of these red flags:

  • Change of skin color
  • Change of skin texture

    Things to keep in mind:

    • It’s important to remember that this treatment requires multiple sessions within a specific timeframe. Some patients believe they can save money by getting ten regular massages at a discounted spa and then only coming to us for one session, expecting all issues to be miraculously resolved. Others may come in for just one monthly session and expect results similar to those in magazine covers.
    • The protocol emphasizes the areas surgically treated. The minimum time per session is 45 minutes for one area. It is necessary to increment 15 minutes for each additional area.

    • Schedule a consultation if you are unsure of the best course of action

Book your first session, weekday Post-Surgery Drainage below, and feel the difference.  Experience why this “second choice” should have been your first option.

I want to book only 45 minutes, but I have lipo in multiple areas. Would that be enough?

If the box recommends leaving the hair color for 40 minutes, washing it off after 15 minutes won’t work effectively.  The same happens here that each area needs time for the therapist to work on.

How many sessions will I need?

Depending on the condition you are when you come to our practice. The therapist will do a quick evaluation with your first session.

My doctor recommended a total of ten sessions and I already did eight. Can I book just two?

Sure, you can. The first session includes a quick evaluation; based on that assessment, the therapist will suggest whether your arrival condition is optimal for discontinuing the treatment or if more sessions are needed.
